We live in an age of effective and safe medications for many psychiatric problems. Whenever I recommend medication treatment, I will explain the options and the likely risks and benefits of each. An educated patient is the best partner in his or her own treatment. Many patients also want to research medicines for themselves. I am happy to discuss concerns that come up in this way.
I specialize in combining psychotherapy and medications, and because of my scientific research, have particular expertise in their interactions. In fact, some medicines clearly interfere with the beneficial effects of therapy. Many appear to be neutral. Some medicines can actually make therapy faster, easier and more effective.
I advocate for medication when it's the best option for someone. Some patients are reluctant to take medications, and I am happy to support this decision when equally effective or superior alternatives are available. |
